When did your company join United Fresh?
In the early 2000s
What was your first job in the horticulture industry?
My first job in the industry was working on the potato harvester in the family business, probably aged about eight or nine years old. We got paid $5 per hour. Good pay but we were expected to work well.
What does a typical day look like for you?
There is now no such thing as a typical day. I can be involved in everything from a directors’ meeting to setting up a cultivator in the same day. My role is varied and moves with the season and the requirements of running a progressive growing business. I do seem to find myself spending more time on compliance, environmental and people issues than my core activity, growing.
What is it you most enjoy about your job?
Growing and delivering a successful crop to my customers, most enjoyment is the planning and growing the crop, having to deal with a lot of variables out of my control and still nailing it.
What is your greatest achievement to date – personal or professional?
Riding an entire Tour de France and having my own successful potato brand
Golden Gourmet potato
